Restaurants, Tapas and wine

Denia is a gourmet's paradise, especially for seafood and Mediterranean food lovers. The city is known for its gamba roja de Denia, the local red prawn, which is often served as a delicacy in seafood restaurants. Paella, in several variations, is also a must-try. Some of the highlights in Denia are:

Food

  • The city has plenty of cosy tapas bars like Ironia, where you can enjoy smaller dishes like tapas de marisco (seafood tapas) and escalivada (roasted vegetables). Bar La Tapita del PAPi also comes highly recommended for delicious tapas.
  • At dusk, head to the Street Food Market (carrer del pont 18) to try small dishes from around the world.
  • If you like really good fish, try La Xerna del Mar or Republic Denia with fantastic views over the harbour.
  • The whole pier, 500 metres from the flat, is recommended anyway. You will find many different (hip) restaurants here, something for everyone and great food by the water.
  • If you feel like cooking for yourself, start at the Mercat Municipal for the best and freshest ingredients from the region.
  • Merakidenia only started in 2024 and has mega flavourful and jammy Asian cuisine! Same owner as Republic (not cheap, but very good value for money)
  • In Spain or not ... sometimes you just want sushi ;-) For this, go to Sushiber (or Japi Japo if Sushiber is full - reservations recommended) for the best sushi in Denia.
  • Do you like Indian/Nepalese? Then Buddha Castle is highly recommended!
  • Cantina Italiana - still nice to imagine yourself in Italy for a while with really great Italian food and ditto wines.

Wine bars

  • Andaras Ibéricos - a tavern specialising in Iberian produce, wine and beer ... a great place to try over 40 different types of wine by the glass. As a nice touch, you get matching tapas with each glass here.
  • aDuana Wine Experience - cosy bar with (over 400) fantastic wines, tapas and other good food. A bit more atmospheric inside than outside and regularly has live music.
  • Besides that, it is really worth a drive to Jalón (Xálo) to visit some nice wineries. See ‘activities’ on this website for tips!
  • One of the better wineries is Pepe Mendoza a 30-minute drive away and highly recommended.
